HOW CAN WE ELECT A POOR PERSON?

I can't defend John Edwards' lifestyle. The hypocrisy of his message and his lifestyle is inescapable. But what do we do with his message of the two Americas and the need for sacrifice? Is is less true because he only talks the talk and doesn't walk the walk? The sad reality is that the political system as it is currently dys-funtioning requires millions of dollars to get elected president thus nearly requiring candidates to have personal fortunes. We need to hear the message, perhaps a better messenger may come along. I don't know what it will take, perhaps it is not about the messenger but about America. JFK certainly had great personal wealth, but somehow he was able to speak with integrity about poverty. This is certainly true of his brother Ted, who despite his extreme wealth has consistently supported legislation that favored the working class and the impoverished. Perhaps we are simply too accustomed to fault-finding as a way of discrediting opponents to see beyond that sort of pettiness. Having said all that I still wish Edwards the individual had the credibility to match Edwards the politician.

Blog you later,
Pastor Ian

Amen too that! You're right though. It's a great message he has, but going back to what you said. People would rather discredit their opponents in trivial matters, than try and understand the greater meaning of the message.

Why not stop, take a deep breath, and take a look around our world today. Lets look into global warming, water sources being polluted, etc. and then say that we really truly do not understand why Edwards would be suggesting these facts.

Because he lives wealthy it makes it less true? Hah! I'm worked up over this one. That is all.

Hello Ian,
I think we have seen the danger of a hypocrite in the White house over the past 4 years. A hypocrite I voted for! Rest assured no matter the message, beware those who practice not what they preach. How would your parishioner's confidence in you be affected if you engaged on Monday that which you preached against on Sunday.
You know me to be a staunch conservative Christian voter. Hypothetically, I could be persuaded to vote liberal, libertarian, or green if there were any candidates who were of provable integrity and honor. At the very least one would know where the candidate actually stood!
Unfortunately on both sides of the isle there are few who fit the bill, the front runners with all the cash are the front runners because of the cash. While some of those honorable men with true sand are not being heard, much I fear to the detriment of our political system, and the withering trust of the American people.

mkz, the truth you speak is the reason for my angst around this candidate. The problem is that I want the message of the two Americas and the need to sacrifice to be heard, but monied interests will practically guarantee that there will be no candidate with integrity to bring forth that message.

Indeed the front runners with the cash are in fact front runners because of the cash. Big money is corrupting, no has corrupted our political system. It is clear that the system needs to be fixed, but what are we to do in the mean time?

That's the easiest part of all Ian! Be the best servants of Christ He enables us to be according to His word, be as sly as a fox yet harmless as a dove. Remember who is in control brother, not money, not the electoral collage nor the shadow government that haunts the dreams of conspiracy theorists throughout the nation. I feel we who know Christ by the Grace of God are to be ministering to the desperate miserable rats (the same we were before we accepted Christ) seeking a way off the sinking ship of the world that will by His Word inevitably sink. Christ is that ministry. Not to sound unkind Ian, but you seem as interested in patching the endless hole in the hull caused by the Fall to keep the ship afloat a little while longer as you do directing the poor creatures to the only exit God provided, Jesus the Living Word.
While my heart pounds over the races at the political arena I do not share the same angst, God's appointed for the upcoming term will win, by a landslide or a single vote. Either way His will be done.
